For what genre? That could help.
FREE DRUMS : if just for mockups I wouldn't buy XLN, just use the MT Powerdrums which is excellent and comes with grooves. SSD5 good too, and DR84 for electronic sounds. All free.
Kontakt alternatives : I don't love NI sounds myself but the free Kt player does have some good 3rd party stuff. Recent Blue Chimes keys are great. Arturia Lab has great sounds and can buy individual packs, free version to try.
IK Samplitude is fairly classic nothing exciting but can do bread and butter sounds for free.
For the cool sounds and to go beyond Massive I'd really recommend you spend your money on a U-HE synth like Diva or Hive or Zebra. U-HE gave us the amazing free Zebra CM, Triple Cheese and Podolski all 3 fantastic free synths, they deserve to be supported by buying one of their legendary flagship products.
For FREE FX : Kilohearts as mentioned, the TDR compressor and EQ, Burier or Heatwave saturation, Deelay, Skynet reverb, the iZotope freebies, lots of quality choices.
