This is interesting to hear spoken directly. It is so true but the complete opposite of the marketing on the poster for the film about the rave.
The very first wave of Acid seemed to be an all of us thing but really it was not. Or maybe that was over very fast as while I was a (bit of a) pioneer in Electronic music making in my city, the moment these Doof kids arrived, they did nothing but spit & shit on me, and people like me: everyone who didn't use that exact drum sample.
How dare I make my own drum sounds with my lovely Emax II when their made-up rules said this week I had to use Sample X in the approved Ache-i nastybox. They didn't ever send me the email about what sample I had to use next week, but they did hold the moral right to say how sucky I was as I was standing there. It was mean and totally destroyed ALL music, as that became the dominant mindset everywhere, not just in the Doof room. Hence as Bones said in another thread it is now all derivative drivel - esp the stuff 'modern' people say is creative. But if you want to play on that stage you have to play their game - f**ked up or not.
Otherwise, understand that you can take your path making your sounds, your style, your way (and I believe one should or no one ever will and Music is dead). You will struggle as we all do when we are passed & cast over. But you might also become the one who leads with something worth listening to and following. YOU CAN"T DO BOTH THO at least not without a cast iron set, and having a cast iron set is not part of the modern playbook of character traits. Asking "What is the Best...?" is a sure sign of lightweight legumes.
