Personally, I just test them in a use situation. I know what I hope to achieve and will/won't accept in use. The best use is in a real piece/mix but that is not always as easy when developing the device so compare to similar tools.
Just be sure to be aware of level differences - if relevant - or you make a sound goodifier that is a sound badifyer but LOUDifier so you feel it is better.
