I already have one sealed box version of Cakewalk that will never be able to be authorized for use (no servers). I doubt the viability of any older Cakewalk product, it’s changed hands too many times.
older versions you need an account for the original product owner site to obtain the license and activation numbers (or like me, printed to a PDF so i don't need to be online :-) - v5 thru SPLAT). the newer CbB (free for now) and the Sonar/Next products require online (or offline) activation.
I have a boxed version of Project 5 that was never opened and never activated. I briefly looked into the possibility of activating it during the free Cakewalk/Bandlab era and it seemed unlikely from what I read online. I just saw Project 5 mentioned in the thread about advanced piano rolls, so maybe it is possible to activate it? But I think probably not since it was never activated and it is now something like 20 years old or so.
