how they sound is secondary
it's not really the plugins that's the problem
it's the lack of songwriting chops that's the problem
yup, thats the primary problem
writing lyrics, especially
Don't put so much weight on lyrics. Listeners mostly invent our own meanings, anyway. Karl Hyde of Underworld used to just spout off random things he recorded into his dictaphone, sometimes not even of himself.
you're right about the death of the author, but meaning is only one aspect of lyrics, and as you imply, perhaps the least important one. in my opinion it's still important to focus on the cadence and "mouth feel," for lack of a better term. a good lyric should feel good to sing, regardless of the actual meaning. the voice is just like any other instrument, and it can still take quite a bit of work to write a line that feels good to "play" while also help furthering the musical narrative in the same way that any other instrumental line would

cellar door vs. undercroft ingress (or basement entryway, substructure postern, etc)

jon anderson's lyrics for Yes may have been nonsensical, but they generally don't feel haphazard or low-effort to me.
