<just figured this out>
In Reaper you can just set the Record mode on the Pigments track - like this:

Don't forget to disable the sequencer when you play it back![;)]( "Wink")

I can't seem to reset the record mode though, so can't "untick" that setting.
I guess we can always reload Pigments (with the same settings) to go back to "normal" recording.
